Skip the damp-proof membrane on a ground-floor slab and moisture pushes the floor apart from underneath. If it's left too long ## What Goes Wrong When Nobody Fixes It. The specific ways this job goes bad when it's ignored, DIY'd, or handed to the cheapest quote in the WhatsApp group. ### Creaks, clicks and movement An unlevel or unfixed subfloor lets boards flex against one another. The noise appears within weeks and the only real fix is to lift the floor and start with the deck below it. ### Buckling and lifting Wood, laminate and LVT all move with heat and humidity. Without a perimeter expansion gap and correct acclimatisation, the floor has nowhere to go and lifts in the middle or pushes the skirting off the wall. ### Damp coming up through the slab Concrete ground floors give off moisture for a long time. Fitting a moisture-sensitive floor without a DPM or a liquid damp-suppressant traps it — cupping boards, failed adhesive and a musty smell follow. ### Messy edges and thresholds Gaps at the skirting, oversized trims, wandering scribes around door linings and mismatched thresholds between rooms make a good-quality floor look cheap. Then laid to the agreed direction with staggered joints, correct perimeter expansion, glue-down or floating build-up as the product and the underfloor heating dictate, and cuts scribed around linings, pipes and hearths. - 5 ### Trims, finish and clean Thresholds, ramps and edge trims fitted; skirting reinstated or beading pinned; expansion gaps closed neatly. Deep detail ## Materials, Methods & Where It Applies. The specification-level answers the internet usually skips. ### Floor types and where they suit Engineered wood — a real timber wear layer on a stable ply core; the best choice over underfloor heating and the only wood we recommend on a concrete slab. Solid wood — beautiful and sandable many times, but it moves more and is happiest on a timber subfloor in a stable environment. LVT — extremely hard-wearing, warm underfoot, fully waterproof, and available in glue-down or click formats; our usual recommendation for kitchens, utilities and busy family hallways. Laminate — the most cost-effective and good for rentals, but it doesn't like standing water at the joints. Tile — the most durable and the best heat conductor for UFH, and covered in detail on our tiling service. ### Subfloor preparation in detail Level tolerance matters more than people expect: most click floors want no more than 3mm deviation over a 2m straight-edge, and glue-down LVT is stricter still because every dip telegraphs through the thin material. On timber we re-screw the deck, punch proud nails, then overboard with 6mm ply screwed at close centres. On concrete we grind high spots, prime, and pour a flexible self-levelling compound. Where a slab has no effective DPM, a two-coat liquid epoxy membrane goes down before the levelling compound. ### Underfloor heating and floor build-ups The total tog value of underlay plus floor should generally stay at or below 1.5 for the heating to work efficiently, which rules out thick acoustic underlays. Engineered wood, LVT and tile all work well; solid wood generally doesn't. The system is run for the manufacturer's conditioning period before fitting, switched off during fitting, then brought back up in small daily increments afterwards. ### Expansion, acclimatisation and moisture Every floating floor needs a continuous perimeter expansion gap — usually 10–15mm — hidden behind skirting or beading, plus expansion breaks on long runs and in doorways beyond the manufacturer's maximum span. Boards are acclimatised flat in the room, not stood on end in a cold hallway. On a new-build or freshly screeded slab we test moisture rather than guessing, because a screed can need a very long drying period before it's ready for a moisture-sensitive floor. ### Edges, thresholds and reinstatement Wherever possible we remove and reinstate the skirting rather than pin beading over it — it costs a little more labour and looks considerably better. Door linings and architraves are undercut so the floor slides beneath them instead of being scribed around them. Between different floor types we use a matched threshold or ramp bar, and internal doors are eased and re-hung where the new build-up has changed the clearance.
