The service
## External Rendering — The Short Version.
A plain-English overview of what the DAB team delivers, who it's for and when it matters. No marketing filler.

What it is

External rendering is the protective, decorative coating applied to the outside walls of a property. It covers traditional sand-cement scratch-and-top-coat systems, one-coat monocouche through-colour render, thin-coat silicone and acrylic systems over a basecoat and mesh, pebble-dash and Tyrolean textures, and patch repair or complete re-render of tired existing elevations.

Who it's for

Homeowners whose render is cracked, stained or blown; owners of extensions that need the new and old elevations tied together and unified; landlords protecting a rental from driving rain; and developers finishing new-build or rebuilt masonry that has to be weather-tight before handover.

When you need it

Render needs attention when it sounds hollow when tapped, when hairline map cracking appears, when green algae or dark water staining spreads below sills and gutters, when paint keeps flaking off, or when an extension leaves you with two mismatched finishes on one wall.

Why professional help matters

Render is a moisture-management system, not just paint with grit in it. Bead placement, mesh laps, mix ratios, movement joints and the strength of each coat relative to the one behind it decide whether the elevation stays sound for twenty-five years or delaminates in three winters. Get the coat strengths the wrong way round and the render pulls the face off the brick as it fails.

## What Goes Wrong When Nobody Fixes It.
The specific ways this job goes bad when it's ignored, DIY'd, or handed to the cheapest quote in the WhatsApp group.

### Blown, hollow render
Render applied to a dusty, unprimed or over-strong background loses its key. It debonds silently, holds water behind the face, and eventually comes off in sheets — usually taking the substrate face with it.

### Cracking that lets water in
Missing bead at openings, no mesh reinforcement at corners of windows, or a mix too rich in cement produces cracking that funnels rainwater straight into the wall. Internal damp patches around reveals almost always start as a render defect.

### Permanent staining and algae
A cheap non-breathable finish on a wet elevation holds surface moisture, and north-facing walls go green within a season. The wrong coating also traps moisture inside the wall, pushing damp indoors.

### Mismatched patches that never blend
Spot-repairing through-colour render without knowing the system and batch leaves visible shadows across the elevation. Where a blend is not achievable we say so upfront and price the full elevation instead.

Our process
## Five Steps. Zero Guesswork.
The exact system our team runs on every job — from your first message to the certificate in your handover pack.

- 1

### On-site survey
We tap-test the existing render across each elevation, note hollow sections, check window and door details, look at ground levels and DPC, assess access and scaffold requirements, and photograph every fault. Free and no obligation.

- 2

### Fixed written quote
Within 2–3 working days you get an itemised quote covering scaffold, strip-out and disposal, system specified (sand-cement, monocouche or silicone thin-coat), beading, mesh, colour and texture, and making good around sills, pipes and rainwater goods.

- 3

### Access, protection and prep
Scaffold erected by a fully insured supplier, windows and doors masked, drives and planting sheeted. Failed render hacked off, joints raked, background dampened or primed as the system requires, stop beads, bell-cast beads and angle beads set plumb and level, and movement joints formed where the substrate changes.

- 4

### Render application
Sand-cement: scratch coat ruled and combed, allowed to cure, then top coat floated or sponged to the agreed texture. Thin-coat systems: basecoat applied, full alkali-resistant mesh embedded with laps at every corner and opening, ruled flat, primed once cured, then through-colour topcoat applied and rubbed up wet-on-wet to avoid joins.

- 5

### Detailing, clean-down and sign-off
Beads cut clean, reveals squared, rainwater goods refitted, masking removed and the site jet-swept. Scaffold struck once the finish has cured. We walk the elevations with you before the final invoice.

Why hire the DAB team
## Specific Wins. Not Vague Promises.
What you actually get when you hire us for this job — measurable, provable, and reflected in every one of our verified reviews.

-
### A genuinely weather-tight elevation
Correct bead, mesh and coat build-up sheds driving rain away from the wall rather than into it — the single biggest cause of internal damp on solid-wall homes.

-
### Through-colour finishes that don't need painting
Monocouche and silicone systems carry the colour through the material, so there is no five-yearly repaint cycle and chips don't show a different colour underneath.

-
### Old and new elevations unified
Extensions, garage conversions and rebuilt walls disappear into one continuous finish instead of announcing themselves in mismatched brick.

-
### Breathable specs for period walls
Solid-wall and lime-built properties get a breathable lime or silicone system so moisture can still leave the wall rather than being sealed in.

-
### Priced upfront, scaffold included
Access costs are in the quote from day one. No mid-job surprise for scaffolding, skips or disposal.

-
### £10M public liability
Working at height next to neighbouring property is covered. Policy schedule available on request.

Deep detail
## Materials, Methods & Where It Applies.
The specification-level answers the internet usually skips.

### Render systems we use
Traditional sand-cement render — a two or three-coat build in a graded mix, finished float, sponge, Tyrolean or pebble-dash, then painted with a breathable masonry paint. Monocouche — a one-coat, factory-batched through-colour render, machine or hand applied, scraped back to a fine even texture. Thin-coat silicone systems such as K-Rend Silicone TC and equivalents — a mesh-reinforced basecoat plus a highly water-repellent, self-cleaning through-colour topcoat, the best performer on exposed elevations. Lime render for period and solid-wall properties where breathability matters more than hardness.

### Backgrounds and preparation
Every background takes a different key. Common brick takes render directly once raked and dampened. Dense engineering brick, concrete block and previously painted walls need a bonding primer or a spatterdash coat. Insulated render (EWI) boards are mechanically fixed and basecoated with full mesh. Mixed substrates — brick meeting block at an extension tie-in — always get mesh strips over the junction plus a movement joint where the change is structural, because they move at different rates.

### Textures and colours
Scraped monocouche gives an even fine-grain finish in 1.5mm or 2mm grades. Silicone topcoats come in the same grades with a fuller colour range and better dirt resistance. Sponge float gives a softer, more traditional open texture. Tyrolean and pebble-dash suit matching existing 1930s–1970s stock. We produce a sample board or a discreet trial panel on site so you sign off the exact colour and grade under your own daylight before we cover an elevation.

### Repairs versus full re-render
Isolated blown patches on a painted sand-cement elevation can usually be cut out, re-rendered and blended, then the whole elevation repainted for a uniform result. Through-colour render is far harder to patch invisibly — if more than a small proportion of an elevation has failed, re-rendering the full elevation to a natural break (a corner or a downpipe line) gives a result you won't be able to see from the pavement. We tell you honestly which one your wall needs.

### Timing, weather and curing
Render is weather-dependent work. We don't apply in frost, in temperatures below about 5°C, in driving rain, or in full blazing sun on a south elevation without shading the scaffold, because all of those ruin the cure and the colour. Sand-cement wants slow, even curing and light dampening in hot spells. Thin-coat systems need the basecoat fully cured before the topcoat goes on. We build that drying time into the programme rather than rushing it.

FAQ
## External Rendering — Straight Answers.
The questions we're asked at almost every survey. Not on the list? Call 07834 974462 — the DAB team is happy to talk it through.

How much does external rendering cost in Staines-upon-Thames?+As a guide across Surrey, sand-cement render runs roughly £45–£70 per m² and through-colour silicone or monocouche systems roughly £75–£110 per m², with scaffold typically £800–£2,500 depending on the elevations. Every property differs, so our free survey produces a fixed written price rather than a rate.

How long does rendering a house take?+A single rear elevation is usually 3–5 working days plus scaffold. A full three-bedroom semi typically runs 2–3 weeks including strip-out, curing time between coats and scaffold up and down.

Can you render over existing render?+Sometimes — if the existing render is sound across the whole elevation, well keyed and not painted with an impermeable coating. If it sounds hollow anywhere, it comes off. Rendering over failing render simply hides the problem and adds weight to a failing bond.

Will rendering stop my damp problem?+It stops penetrating damp caused by a failed or cracked external finish, which is common on solid-wall homes. It does not fix rising damp from a failed DPC, condensation, or a leaking gutter. We identify which one you actually have at the survey rather than selling you render for the wrong problem.

Which render is best for an exposed wall?+A mesh-reinforced thin-coat silicone system. It is highly water-repellent, flexible enough to cope with movement, and its self-cleaning behaviour keeps west and north-facing elevations far cleaner than acrylic or plain sand-cement.

Do you need scaffolding?+For anything above single-storey height, yes — and it's included in the quote. Ladders are unsafe for render because the work needs both hands and a continuous wet edge across the wall.

Can you match my neighbour's pebble-dash?+Usually. We take a sample of the existing aggregate, source the closest match and trial a panel. Weathering means a fresh dash always reads slightly brighter at first and tones in over the following year.

Do you cover other Surrey towns?+Yes — rendering across Staines-upon-Thames, Egham, Ashford, Chertsey, Sunbury-on-Thames, Weybridge, Windsor, Feltham and Kingston upon Thames.
